On Friday 6 June 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, hosted the official opening of the "Red Path" cycle route (PC8) linking Esch-sur-Alzette and Belval.

As reported by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Roads and Bridges Administration, minister Backes attended the event alongside Member of Parliament and Alderman of Esch-sur-Alzette, Meris Šehović, officials from the Roads and Bridges Administration and representatives from the city of Esch-sur-Alzette.

The project, completed as part of Luxembourg’s national cycle network, is the first in the country to feature use of a red surface. The ministry noted that the red asphalt improves the visibility of cycle paths and enhances safety for cyclists and that new cycling infrastructure would feature this red surfacing, where possible.

The 340m stretch connects the PC8 cycle bridge (“Vëlodukt”) directly with the city centre of Esch-sur-Alzette, extending the existing PC8 route to Rue du Canal, creating a safe cycle route into the centre of the city. It also offers a direct connection to the Esch-sur-Alzette railway station via Boulevard Prince Henri.

Minister Backes said: “I am delighted to open Luxembourg’s first cycle path with a red surface, which makes it instantly recognisable as a cycling route. This clear marking improves visibility and safety. Cyclists benefit from better guidance and greater comfort and road users immediately see that this space is designated for cyclists.”

According to the report, construction of the route began on 2 April 2024 and finished in May 2025 and the total cost of the development was €1.35 million.
