On Friday 26 September 2025, on the occasion of the first edition of the Luxembourgish Language Day (Dag vun der Lëtzebuerger Sprooch), Luxembourg’s Minister of Culture, Eric Thill, and Minister of National Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, will present the actions planned in schools to mark the day.
The ministers will also outline a series of measures aimed at promoting the learning of the Luxembourgish language and culture within the education system
26 September is the European Day of Languages, which celebrates linguistic and cultural diversity across Europe, as well as individual multilingualism. As noted by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Culture, every citizen is encouraged to learn a new language and, in a country where multilingualism is part of daily life, Luxembourg will also celebrate the Luxembourgish language on this occasion. This year’s slogan is: “Schwätz mat - Lëtzebuergesch verbënnt” (Speak up - Luxembourgish connects).
An essential aspect of promoting the Luxembourgish language is its visibility in public spaces and the reinforcement of its value. This year’s focus is on strengthening Luxembourgish as a living language and encouraging its active use, since the language “creates connections and builds bridges”.
The Ministry added that the day also offers an opportunity to reflect on Luxembourg’s unique multilingual situation, where switching easily between languages in everyday life is seen as both enriching and distinctive. Luxembourgish remains rooted in this multilingualism and continues to play an important role, linked to the origins, history and identity of the country and its citizens.
The Ministry further underlined that learning a language also means discovering a culture, with a shared language helping to foster solidarity, cooperation and social cohesion across the country. The Dag vun der Lëtzebuerger Sprooch aims to encourage everyone to speak Luxembourgish, regardless of their level: “Schwätz mat - Lëtzebuergesch verbënnt”.
