On Wednesday 22 October 2025, the foundation stone ceremony for the extension of the La Rocade administrative building took place in Luxembourg-Gare, in the presence of Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer and Deputy Mayor of Luxembourg City, Maurice Bauer.
The La Rocade administrative building, designed and realised by the architectural practice BFF on behalf of the City of Luxembourg (VdL), is situated between the Gare and Bonnevoie districts on Boulevard d’Avranches and opened its doors in 2007. The VdL said it had chosen to extend the building in order to respond to its continuously evolving internal needs and to offer its administrative teams more suitable working spaces.
The VdL is building the extension on a plot perpendicular to the existing building and as part of the development, modernisation works are also being carried out on technical installations which the VdL said are reaching the end of their operational life in the original building. The transformation of the existing building, together with the construction of the annex, will increase its operating capacity from 224 to 390 staff members.
The VdL stated that the construction of the extension, which will cover a total area of approximately 4,700 m², will provide improved internal circulation and a redesigned ground-floor reception area in the existing building, while integrating a new training area and an exhibition room. The upper floors of the extension will be primarily dedicated to administrative workspaces and the top floor will house a multi-purpose hall with an adjoining terrace.
According to the VdL, the new spaces meet the needs of the municipal administration while also offering areas for training, exhibitions and informal meetings, with features promoting soft mobility, such as a bicycle and scooter garage. Two underground levels will accommodate technical facilities and storage areas and the complex will be equipped with solar panels, reflecting VdL’s commitment to sustainable and energy-efficient construction.
The project, valued at €53.43 million (including tax), received the approval of the Municipal Council on 14 November 2022. Construction of the extension is expected to be completed in early 2028. Construction work on the existing building is expected to be completed in early 2030.
