On Wednesday 14 January 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice confirmed that more than 8,000 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality in 2025.

A total of 8,223 people acquired Luxembourgish citizenship last year (up from 7,415 in 2024) following the naturalisation, option and recovery procedures.

The split was as follows:

  • 6,544 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality by option;
  • 1,298 people obtained Luxembourgish nationality by naturalisation;
  • 381 people reclaimed Luxembourgish nationality (by recovery).

The ministry recalled that the deadline for completing the recovery declaration based on descent from a Luxembourgish ancestor on 1 January 1900 expired on 31 December 2025.

Applications submitted up to this date will be processed during 2026. As such, definitive figures regarding the total number of people who have benefited from this provision are not yet available.

The ministry also shared a list of statistics showing the (foreign) nationality of those who obtained Luxembourgish citizenship in 2025. Among them were 998 Brazilian and 657 US citizens (both countries having historic ties with Luxembourg), as well as:

  • 1,176 Portuguese nationals
  • 1,090 French nationals
  • 406 Belgian nationals
  • 342 German nationals
  • 330 Italian nationals
  • 208 Syrian nationals
  • 167 Indian nationals
  • 166 Russian nationals
  • 161 Cape Verdean nationals
  • 141 Turkish nationals

Among the many other nationalities represented, there were 120 British, 85 Ukrainian and 30 Irish citizens who became Luxembourgers in 2025.
