On Friday 26 June 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of Sport called on organisers of outdoor sporting events to exercise the utmost vigilance this weekend as temperatures are forecast to reach up to 40°C.

According to the ministry, the exceptional weather conditions may pose significant health and safety risks for athletes, participants, volunteers, coaches, officials, organisers and spectators attending sporting events. The recommendations follow guidance issued by the Risk, Severe Weather and Flood Assessment Unit (CERI) during the current period of extreme heat.

The ministry recommends:

  • carefully reassessing the organisation of outdoor competitions, sporting events and gatherings scheduled for this weekend;
  • postponing or cancelling activities where safe conditions cannot be guaranteed;
  • adjusting schedules to avoid the hottest parts of the day and, where possible, holding events in the morning, evening or on Sunday, when temperatures are expected to be lower;
  • reducing the duration and intensity of physical activity, particularly for young people, older adults and amateur athletes;
  • ensuring continuous access to drinking water and providing regular breaks;
  • providing shaded or cooled areas for participants and spectators;
  • ensuring appropriate first-aid resources and rapid response procedures are in place for heat-related incidents.

The ministry stressed that the health and safety of everyone involved must remain the highest priority during these exceptional weather conditions. It also encouraged the public to follow the health recommendations issued by Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Social Security during periods of extreme heat.
