On Monday 29 June 2026, on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schuman (1886–1963), the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, in collaboration with :uxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Roads and Bridges Administration, paid tribute to one of the most visionary figures in European history.

Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg Minister for Mobility and Public Works, and Anne Calteux, Head of the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, unveiled a tourist information sign in honour of Robert Schuman. The ceremony took place in the presence of Xavier Bettel, Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, and Roland Fox, Director of the Roads and Bridges Administration.

Born in Luxembourg and widely regarded as the “Father of Europe”, Robert Schuman left a lasting mark on the continent’s history by laying, on 9 May 1950, the foundations for unprecedented cooperation between European nations. His proposal to pool coal and steel production between France and Germany led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), of which Luxembourg was a founding member, and which marked the first concrete step towards the European Union as we know it today.

The sign features a photograph of Robert Schuman with the Kirchberg plateau in the background. This district, a true historic heart of Europe, stands out among European capitals as it hosts the highest concentration of European institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Court of Justice of the European Union, the European Court of Auditors, the European Investment Bank, as well as the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, the European Stability Mechanism and the Translation Centre, among others. The slogan “Luxembourg, the European one” symbolically refers to the Grand Duchy as a European capital and one of the six founding states of the European Union.

The tourist sign has been installed on the A6 motorway linking Luxembourg to the Belgian border, near the Luxembourg-Centre Bertrange exit.
