Luxembourg’s national athletics team secured promotion to Division 2 following their participation in the European Athletics Team Championships Division 3 in Maribor, Slovenia, held from Tuesday 24 to Wednesday 25 June 2025.
Teams competed in eighteen men’s and women’s disciplines, as well as one mixed 4x400 m relay. Luxembourg’s athletes earned 410 points in Division 3, finishing second overall. Iceland placed first with 461.5 points, followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina with 382 points. All three teams secured promotion to Division 2.
In an interview with Chronicle.lu, Anouk Thill, Vice President of the Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA) and Head of Delegation, shared her thoughts on the team’s performance: “I'm of course very happy with the final result, but what makes me the proudest is the commitment shown by each and every athlete and the incredible team spirit throughout the competition. In a team event like this, every point matters, and the collective must come before the individual.” She added: “We had a great balance between experienced athletes and promising young talents, a winning mix. It was a special moment and a beautiful memory for the whole team.”
Several national records for Luxembourg were broken during the competition. 21-year-old Melody Koffi set a new national record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.54 m on her first attempt. Victoria Rausch won the 100 m hurdles in 13.23 seconds, also setting a new national record. The team of Glenn Lassine, Fanny Arendt, David Friederich and Elise Romero set a new national record in the mixed 4x400m relay, winning the race in 3:25.57. They surpassed the previous record of 3:29.34 set in 2023.
Gil Weicherding improved his personal best in the 3000 m steeplechase, winning the event in 8:49.34. Mathis Espagnet placed second in the 800 m with a time of 1:50.02, finishing behind Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two-time World Championships medallist Amel Tuka, who won the race in 1:49.37.
