On Tuesday 16 December 2025, LuxTrust experienced a disruption of service which began in the evening and continued into the following day, affecting authentication and a range of online services.
According to LuxTrust, “since 15:20, some of our services, including authentication, have been unavailable due to a technical incident. The cause has now been identified.” The company stated that the incident “has no impact on the integrity of our systems, customer data, or the security of transactions”, adding that its teams are “fully engaged and working to restore services as quickly as possible”.
The disruption has had knock-on effects for several banks that rely on LuxTrust’s authentication services. Luxembourg bank Spuerkeess (Banque et Caisse d'Épargne de l'État, Luxembourg) informed customers that, “due to disruptions encountered by LuxTrust, our applications requiring strong authentication are temporarily unavailable.”
Banque Internationale à Luxembourg (BIL) also confirmed service interruptions, stating: “We inform you that LuxTrust is currently experiencing technical disruptions. Access to BILnet, as well as payments via 3D Secure, are therefore not available.”
Chronicle.lu contacted LuxTrust by phone for further clarification; however, no additional comment was provided at this stage. The company has not yet provided further details regarding the cause of the technical issue, despite a request for clarification submitted by email.
