On the weekend of Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September 2025, Luxembourg’s basketball Enovos Leagues returned from the summer break with Game Day 1 action in both the women’s and men’s championships.
Women’s Enovos League: Champions Gréngewald Absent, Hettig Shines for Wiltz
One of the main news items ahead of the 2025/26 women’s season was the absence of current champions Gréngewald Hueschtert, who decided to compete in the second division due to a shortage of players at the required level, with some retiring and others moving clubs. This left seven teams in the Women’s Enovos League. Among the former Gréngewald players is 34-year-old guard Lizy Hettig, who averaged more than eleven points per game last season and has now joined Les Sangliers Wiltz.
In the opening game against Musel Pikes, Hettig led by example, scoring seventeen points in the first half as Wiltz went into the break 40-29 ahead after a decisive ten-point run in the second quarter. Despite Musel Pikes’ efforts to recover after halftime, the match ended 61-48 in favour of Wiltz, with Hettig emerging as the game’s top scorer on 25 points in 36 minutes on the court.
Speaking to Chronicle.lu after the game, Lizy Hettig acknowledged that her team was still finding its rhythm: “The main goal for us is to come together in offence and defence. It was not the prettiest win, but the season is long and there is plenty of work to do.” She added that with seven teams in the league this year, “the competition feels more balanced,” while on a personal note she underlined the need to continue improving her conditioning and shooting.
In another Game Day 1 match, last season’s runners-up Sparta Bertrange, who also faced significant squad changes, lost to T71 Dudelange after conceding all four quarters. Lauren Anne Van Kleunen led the way for Dudelange with 35 points, accounting for more than a third of her team’s 85-60 victory.
AB Contern also collected maximum points on the opening day. Fabienne Fuger’s team defeated Amicale Steinsel 89-73, with forward Stefanie Grace Kulesza producing a double-double of 37 points and 14 rebounds.
Basket Esch will play their first game of the new season on Sunday 28 September 2025 against Musel Pikes.
Game Day 1:
Amicale Steinsel - AB Contern 73-89
T71 Dudelange - Sparta Bertrange 85-60
Musel Pikes - Les Sangliers Wiltz 48-61
Men’s Enovos League: Strong Start for Etzella, Mixed Results for Newcomers
In the Men’s Enovos League, twelve teams remain in contention this season. Defending champions Etzella Ettelbruck opened their campaign with an away game against Mambra Mamer. The visitors quickly took control, leading 45-34 at halftime, and extended their advantage in the second half to seal a 94-75 victory. Two of Ettelbruck’s new American signings stood out: 25-year-old Adrian Jermaine Delph top-scored with 25 points, while 24-year-old Nicholas Thomas Davis added nineteen.
Last season’s finalists T71 Dudelange began their campaign at home against AB Contern. The hosts effectively decided the game in the first half, leading 46-24 at the break, and despite a late push from Contern, secured an 84-62 win. American debutant Mekhi Jermaine Long impressed for Christophe Ney’s team with a double-double of 25 points and sixteen rebounds.
The league newcomers experienced mixed fortunes in their opening fixtures. Kordall Steelers lost 79-92 away to Amicale Steinsel, while Racing Luxembourg surprised many with an 89-85 home victory against current cup holders Basket Esch.
