On Wednesday 10 June 2026, Stëmm vun der Strooss organised a free distribution of the traditional Portuguese "Sopa da Pedra" (Stone Soup) and desserts at its social restaurant in Luxembourg-Hollerich, marking both Portugal's National Day celebrations and the organisation's 30th anniversary.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Confraria Gastronómica de Almeirim and the Confraria Gastronómica dos Sabores Portugueses no Luxemburgo and was attended by Portugal's Ambassador to Luxembourg, Pedro Sousa e Abreu, and Luxembourg's Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez. The initiative provided a free meal to around 600 disadvantaged people.

"We are here at Stëmm vun der Strooss, which provides food to people who cannot afford to buy it themselves. Today is Portugal's National Day and we are celebrating Sopa da Pedra, a hearty soup that is part of Portugal's cultural and culinary heritage. People have travelled from Portugal especially to share this culture and tradition," Minister Deprez told Chronicle.lu.

he initiative formed part of Portugal's National Day celebrations and brought together volunteers from Portugal and Luxembourg to serve the traditional soup. Beyond providing a warm meal, the event also aimed to promote solidarity and social inclusion.

Alexandra Oxacelay, Director of Stëmm vun der Strooss, highlighted the importance of the initiative for the organisation and the Portuguese community in Luxembourg: "The Portuguese community is the largest group represented among the people we support. Around 13% of those who come to Stëmm vun der Strooss are Portuguese. Today, on Portugal's National Day, Portuguese volunteers have offered 600 meals of Sopa da Pedra, a traditional Portuguese speciality with a history of around 400 years.”
