On Tuesday 26 May 2026, Chronicle.lu visited Cômo Restaurant in Esch-sur-Alzette, where a gradual transition to the next generation is currently underway, with Daniel Favaro and his wife, Evie, increasingly joining Renato Favaro in the day-to-day management of the long-established Italian restaurant.

Located at 19 Rue des Remparts, a short walk from Esch-sur-Alzette City Hall, the restaurant was founded by Renato Favaro in 1989. For nearly twenty years, the establishment held a Michelin star before shifting towards a more accessible concept centred on Italian cuisine, seasonal ingredients and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Today, Cômo continues to focus on Italian and Mediterranean cuisine inspired particularly northern Italian cuisine. According to the restaurant, many key ingredients, including cheeses, olive oils, wines and selected meats, are sourced directly from Italy or selected producers abroad, while fruit and vegetables are mainly purchased locally.

Daniel Favaro explained that although he grew up in the restaurant business, he initially chose another professional path after repeatedly being told by his parents that hospitality was “a tough life”. After studying economics and psychology and gaining experience abroad, he eventually returned to hospitality and worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in the Netherlands, where he met Evie.

Before moving to Luxembourg earlier this year, Daniel and Evie both worked at Michelin-starred restaurant Monarh in Tilburg. Daniel focused on wine, service and restaurant management, while Evie specialised in front-of-house operations and hospitality.

During the visit, the restaurant served a selection of Italian-inspired dishes, including an octopus salad starter, bruschetta topped with lard of Colonnata and a pasta dish combining asparagus and mushrooms. Dessert featured a strawberry cheesecake variation. Most starters on the menu are priced at around €20, while meat and fish dishes generally remain slightly above €40. An €80 tasting menu is also available.

Daniel Favaro noted that while the menu evolves regularly according to seasonal products and availability, the overall concept of the restaurant will remain unchanged during the transition.

Speaking about Luxembourgish customers after several years abroad, he said he appreciates what he described as the local “bon vivant” mentality. “People here enjoy eating well, drinking well and spending time together,” he noted, adding that this atmosphere fits naturally with the restaurant’s Italian approach to dining.

Discussing the importance of maintaining high standards despite economic pressures, he said quality remains central to the restaurant’s identity. “You always strive to do your best,” he explained. “People come here to spend time with family or friends, enjoy good food and leave happy.”

Evie Favaro described Luxembourg’s international atmosphere as one of the aspects she appreciates most after relocating from the Netherlands around six months ago. “We first want to fully understand everything about the restaurant and then gradually develop our own ideas,” Evie Favaro explained. She added that the couple hopes to continue what Renato Favaro has built over the past decades while also hoping to attract younger customers in the future.

The restaurant currently accommodates around sixty guests across several dining rooms and also offers a private upstairs space for groups and events. During Chronicle.lu’s visit, a newly installed terrace in front of the restaurant was also operating, adding additional outdoor seating for the summer season.

The transition at Cômo is expected to remain gradual over the coming years, with Renato Favaro continuing to oversee the kitchen while Daniel and Evie progressively take on greater responsibilities within the restaurant.
