Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade has announced that it recently organised its first meeting of the country's honorary consuls.
On Friday 11 July 2025, the Foreign Ministry organised, for the first time, a meeting bringing together 120 honorary consuls in Luxembourg, where they were welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel.
The programme featured speeches by Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy and Tourism, Lex Delles, as well as a reception at Berg Castle in the presence of Prince Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
The honorary consuls also took part in working sessions with teams from the Foreign Ministry, focusing on consular affairs and foreign trade.
The programme included cultural elements, notably visits to the photography exhibition "The Family of Man" in Clervaux and Vianden Castle.
The ministry explained that Luxembourg currently has a network of 160 honorary consuls. These individuals, whether Luxembourgish nationals or not, represent the Grand Duchy abroad on a voluntary basis, without being state officials.
Working in close cooperation with Luxembourg's embassies and consulates, honorary consuls help defend the interests of the Grand Duchy and its people, provide assistance to citizens in situations of crisis and distress, promote trade and economic interests, and contribute to the development of cultural and scientific relations.
