The Hëllef fir d'Natur Foundation has announced that as part of its ReStruktur programme, it has launched Bam an d’Gewan, a tree-planting campaign for agricultural areas.

According to the Foundation, this free initiative supports farmers and landowners with large plots who wish to restore ecological corridors and strengthen the resilience of rural landscapes.

The Foundation noted that, although often missing from modern agricultural practices, trees provide numerous ecological benefits: offering shelter for wildlife; supporting pollinators; helping control pests; improving soil quality; and storing carbon.

For the Bam an d’Gewan programme, the Foundation has announced it will cover all costs related to planting: supply of suitable local species (apple, pear, plum, oak, chestnut, etc.); planting of the trees; protection against animal gnawing; and biodegradable mulch. The Foundation will also offer technical advice in relation to adapting planting to the specific characteristics of each site and the needs of each participant.

Hëllef fir d'Natur Foundation emphasised that farmers can integrate trees into existing agricultural practices, helping to enrich the landscape and strengthen the ecological network without disrupting farm operations. They added that isolated trees can also play a vital role in agrosystems by providing shade and shelter for livestock, reducing symptoms related to heat stress, such as decreased productivity and feed efficiency and that the presence of trees also strengthens the ecological resilience of agricultural areas in the face of climate change and extreme weather events.

Farmers and landowners interested in participating in the programme can contact The Hëllef fir d’Natur Foundation via email: bam@naturemwelt.lu or on tel: 290 404 323.
