On Thursday 10 September 2026, Film Fund Luxembourg and D’Filmakademie announced that Child, the first feature film by Luxembourgish director Cyrus Neshvad, will represent Luxembourg at the 99th Academy Awards (Oscars) in the “Best International Feature Film” category, as well as at the Goya Awards in the “Best European Feature” category.
D’Filmakademie appointed a selection committee responsible for choosing the film to represent Luxembourg at both ceremonies. Following the national selection process, and after what the organisers described as “careful consideration of the submissions and in-depth discussions among its members”, the committee selected Child. The Oscars ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sunday 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles, while the date of the 2027 Goya Awards ceremony will be announced at a later stage.
In making its choice, the committee highlighted the contribution of Luxembourg’s creative and technical talent, as well as the expertise and know-how across the country’s film industry. According to the committee, Child reflects a “diverse and distinctive Luxembourg cinema” driven by the commitment of professionals in the sector. Working within the conventions of genre cinema, the film also illustrates “the diversity of stories, worlds and approaches” shaping local creation.
Child marks Cyrus Neshvad’s move into feature-length filmmaking following several short films presented and recognised internationally. The Luxembourgish director of Iranian origin was nominated for an Oscar in 2023 in the Best Live Action Short Film category for The Red Suitcase.
Synopsis: As their young son has little time left to live, Anne and Greg are prepared to sacrifice everything to give him one last chance of being saved. But after crossing an unforgivable moral line, they find themselves trapped in a nightmare in which every choice comes at an increasingly high price.
The 78-minute psychological drama/horror film was directed by Cyrus Neshvad and produced by Cynefilms, with Brigitte Urhausen, Anne Klein, Jules Werner, Lydia Indjova, Malik Zidi and Dmytro Yaroshenko.
The film had its world premiere at the 2026 Raindance Film Festival, ahead of its planned release in Luxembourg cinemas in September 2026. Its selection is expected to support the film’s international journey and strengthen its visibility among industry professionals and the wider public.
