The twelfth edition of "Woch vun de Suen" (Money Week) kicked off in Luxembourg on Monday 16 March 2026.
As young people face increasing exposure to online fraud and misleading financial content, the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education and Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth are working together to strengthen financial literacy through practical educational activities in schools.
Running from Monday 16 to Friday 20 March 2026, the Woch vun de Suen initiative aims to equip Cycle 4 pupils (aged ten to twelve) with essential skills to navigate an increasingly complex financial world.
According to the ABBL Foundation, in a world where money is increasingly digital and financial decisions are made earlier, financial education is becoming an essential skill. Young people today are growing up in an environment marked by the widespread adoption of online payments, the rise of investment apps, media attention surrounding cryptocurrencies and the proliferation of online fraud and scams. At the same time, social media platforms disseminate an increasing amount of financial advice, the reliability of which is sometimes questionable, the foundation said.
In this context, acquiring the fundamentals of responsible money management from a young age - understanding the value of money, learning to budget and save - is considered a key lever for enabling young people to make informed choices and protect themselves against these new risks.
"I am delighted by the organisation of 'Woch vun de Suen', which sends a strong signal of cooperation among stakeholders involved in financial education," said Claude Meisch, Luxembourg's Minister of Education, Children and Youth. "This initiative is fully aligned with the ministry's strategy to strengthen young people's financial literacy. By raising awareness among children and teenagers about money and financial management issues, we are giving them essential tools to become responsible citizens and better prepare them for the challenges of their future."
In accordance with the missions of the ABBL Foundation and the OECD recommendations, which advocate transmitting financial skills from a very young age to ensure greater economic resilience, the programme focuses on budgeting. The ABBL Foundation stressed that it is crucial to communicate key concepts early on, such as budgeting (for planning), saving (for resilience in the face of unforeseen events) and responsible consumption (for ethical and sustainable choices). This proactive approach helps young people acquire essential financial skills, guaranteeing their autonomy and future well-being, the foundation added.
"The launch of this new edition of 'Woch vun de Suen' reaffirms the ABBL Foundation's commitment to inclusion and financial education in Luxembourg," stated Jerry Grbic, President of the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education. "Drawing on our field experience since 2015, we are convinced that learning the value of money and the basics of budgeting from a very young age is a key driver of empowerment for children. The foundation helps to better prepare future generations to manage their financial independence wisely."
This year, 76 volunteer trainers - including employees of ABBL member organisations, ABBL staff and CSSF agents - are guiding 1,040 pupils across 69 classes through interactive sessions. A key tool used in the classroom is the "Money Odyssey" application, developed by the ABBL Foundation for Financial Education, which immerses students in the world of finance. The tool is suitable for children, young people and adults. It is designed to transform abstract financial concepts into concrete experiences, covering topics such as banking, savings, budgeting and responsible consumption in a fun and engaging way.
As a prelude to the week, the national final of the European Money Quiz took place on Wednesday 11 March 2026, testing the knowledge of thirteen- to fifteen-year-olds on topics such as inflation, investments, cryptocurrencies and online fraud prevention. The Lycée Ermesinde class achieved a "flawless" performance and will represent Luxembourg at the European final in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday 19 May 2026.
