On Thursday 26 June 2025, Luxembourg's Prison Administration announced that its canine unit is strengthening its team with the arrival of two new dog handlers.
These new appointments aim to expand the canine unit's capabilities to combat the introduction of illicit substances into prisons.
Until now, the canine unit had two handlers, both recruited in 2021 and operational in the three prisons since October 2022. According to the Prison Administration, their mission has proven essential in terms of both prevention and deterrence, with concrete results in the many drug seizures made in the prisons.
In addition to detecting illicit substances, the dogs currently in service have undergone specialised training in the detection of data media whose possession is prohibited in prisons. They can now detect mobile phones, USB drives and other media.
The two new dog handlers are currently undergoing specialised training provided by officers assigned to the Customs and Excise Agency's specialised canine department.
The deployment of two additional detector dogs allows the canine unit to double its presence in all prisons.
