On Friday 26 September 2025, the first official edition of Luxembourgish Language Day took place, coinciding with the European Day of Languages.

As part of the event, Luxembourg Minister of Culture Eric Thill underlined the Government’s commitment to the promotion and enhancement of the Luxembourgish language.

The Ministry of Culture reported that Minister Thill took part in several key moments of the programme, presenting, together with the Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, the Government’s measures for the Luxembourgish language in the education system. The minister also attended the concert of the Ice Clic children’s choir at the Hôtel des Terres Rouges, the seat of the Ministry of Culture. The concert was broadcast live in schools and Maison relais. The minister’s programme continued with a visit to the theatre workshop “D’Méiw”, based on a text by Anton Chekhov, organised by the Bonobo Collective at the National Library.

This first Luxembourgish Language Day stems from Measure 38 of the Action Plan for the Luxembourgish Language (adopted in December 2022), which aims to strengthen the role of the language in daily life, education, culture and research. The chosen motto for this edition was “Schwätz mat – Lëtzebuergesch verbënnt” (“Speak Up – Luxembourgish Connects”), which the ministry said resonated strongly with the public, with many people participating in the events of the day.

In parallel with the various events (conferences, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and educational activities), several new publications on the Luxembourgish language were also showcased, such as À propos… des langues au Luxembourg by the Government Information and Press Service, a special edition of the digital magazine Konterbont by ASBL Autisme Luxembourg, and the new publication of Duden Lëtzebuergesch – Vom Schnëssen und Schneeken.

The ministry said: “The great success of this first edition demonstrates the importance of establishing Luxembourgish Language Day as an annual event in the country. In this regard, the Ministry of Culture will launch a call for projects ahead of the 2026 edition, to involve civil society, the cultural sector and research even more, and to stimulate new initiatives surrounding the Luxembourgish language.”
