On Thursday 24 September 2026, food-waste technology company Smartway reported that Auchan Luxembourg had saved more than 1.2 million food products from waste since deploying its solutions across four stores in 2023.

According to Smartway, Auchan Luxembourg is highlighting the results of the partnership as it marks its 30th anniversary. The retailer has relied on Smartway’s technology solutions to strengthen its food waste policy, helping to avoid 1,495 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and generate close to €1.83 million in savings for consumers.

Luxembourg was the third country in the Auchan Group to adopt Smartway’s solutions, after Romania and France. In 2023, the retailer introduced two modules: Smartdetection, which automatically identifies products approaching their use-by date and alerts teams in real time; and Smartdecision, which calculates the optimal discount level for each item, maximising the chances of sale while preserving margins.

Smartway reported that, three years after deployment, the food waste prevention coverage rate had risen by 38%, meaning that more at-risk products were identified and dealt with before going to waste. The sell-through rate of discounted products increased by 14%, while the value recovery rate rose by 62%.

In total, 1,245,864 products were saved from waste, representing 1,495 tonnes of avoided CO₂ emissions. Optimised markdowns also generated €1,828,874 in savings for Auchan Luxembourg customers.

According to Smartway, automating the detection of short-dated products has reduced the need for manual shelf checks while limiting the risk of oversights and improving team efficiency. Store teams now require less than forty minutes per store each day to check all shelves.

“For 30 years, Auchan Luxembourg has taken concrete action to reduce food waste. Our partnership with Smartway fits fully within this long-term approach. Results were visible from the very first weeks of deployment and continue to be demonstrated over time, in operational, environmental and economic terms. This ability to quickly generate value while supporting our responsibility commitments is a real asset for our teams and our customers,” said Fabrice Le Bon, Store Director at Auchan Opkorn.

Auchan Luxembourg has partnered with Stëmm vun der Strooss to redistribute unsold food since 2009, with the initiative now saving more than 125 tonnes of food per year. The retailer had also introduced donations to local organisations, promotions on short-dated products and ordering tools designed to limit waste at the source before deploying Smartway’s artificial intelligence solutions in 2023.
