Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security has announced that Luxembourg Transplant will hold its traditional “Indoor Cycling” event on Sunday 11 October 2026 at LuxExpo The Box in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

The event is being organised ahead of World Organ Donation Day, celebrated annually on 17 October. On this occasion, the ministry, in collaboration with Luxembourg Transplant, the official organisation responsible for managing organ donations and transplants in Luxembourg, recalled the vital importance of organ donation in saving lives and strengthened its public awareness-raising activities.

“Organ donation offers a second chance. It makes it possible to save lives, but also to restore autonomy, mobility and hope for a better future to many people,” stressed Martine Deprez, Luxembourg's Minister of Health and Social Security.

The awareness-raising event aims to bring together approximately 1,500 participants supporting organ donation. For this seventeenth edition, Luxembourg Transplant aims to set a world record for this cause, certified by Guinness World Records.

Minister Deprez, Martine Hansen, Minister for Sport, Max Hahn, Minister for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception, as well as Dr Jean-Claude Schmit, Director of Health, will be present on site between 10:00 and 16:30 to support the initiative and meet participants.

The event will take place in Hall 7 (South Entrance) at LuxExpo The Box, 10 Circuit de la Foire Internationale, from 10:15 to 18:15.

According to the ministry, for certain serious illnesses, organ transplantation remains the only treatment option that allows patients to survive. For others, an organ transplant makes it possible to regain a better quality of life with less dependence on devices supporting their failing organs.

The ministry emphasised that it is therefore essential for Luxembourg to contribute to organ donation so that residents can benefit from transplants.

In 2025, Luxembourg recorded only two organ donors, compared with seven in both 2023 and 2024. Thanks to these donations, four organs were successfully transplanted through Eurotransplant, the European network responsible for managing organ procurement and transplantation.

At the beginning of 2025, 99 patients were registered on Luxembourg's national transplant waiting list. During the year, 55 new patients were added to the list, while 43 residents of the Grand Duchy received transplants at centres abroad.

The ministry also recalled that the Shared Care Record (Dossier de soins partagé – DSP) allows every citizen to clearly express their wishes regarding organ donation. Upon first logging in, users can accept or refuse the possible removal of organs after their death. This information has official status and is checked by a doctor before any procedure.

Before removing organs, the doctor must always verify the wishes of the deceased person by consulting the DSP. If the record does not exist or is closed, the doctor turns to the designated trusted person.

Under the amended Law of 25 November 1982 on organs intended for transplantation, any person who has not expressed opposition is considered a potential organ donor.
