Luc Frieden Travels to Kyiv for Ukraine Independence Anniversary, Coalition Meeting

On Monday 24 August 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of State reported that Prime Minister Luc Frieden had travelled to Kyiv at the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to attend ceremonies marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing”.

According to the ministry, during the ceremonies marking the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, the Prime Minister Frieden paid tribute to the victims of the war and reaffirmed Luxembourg's solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

“For more than four years, the Ukrainian people have resisted Russia's war of aggression and, in doing so, defended freedom in Europe. Their courage and endurance deserve our recognition and continued support,” stated the Prime Minister Frieden.

The meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” provided an opportunity for the Prime Minister Frieden and other heads of state and government to discuss support for Ukraine, particularly in preparation for the winter period and strengthening the resilience of its energy infrastructure, noted the ministry. Discussions also focused on the development of Europe's security architecture and the conditions for a just and lasting peace, based on respect for international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Prime Minister Frieden held bilateral talks with President Zelensky, as well as with Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi. Discussions focused in particular on bilateral relations, the continuation of Luxembourg's support for Ukraine and the main challenges concerning European security in light of the latest developments on the ground, said the ministry.
