On Tuesday 21 April 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security announced the extension of a temporary suspension of the authorisation to practise medicine.
Pursuant to Article 16 of the amended law of 29 March 1983 concerning the practice of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine, the temporary suspension - initially issued by decree on 22 January 2026 against a physician (not named by the ministry) - has been extended for a period of 21 months. The measure continues to apply only to procedures related to orthopaedic surgery.
This decision is based on a report prepared and unanimously signed by a panel of three experts, who concluded that all the cases examined involved unjustified surgical indications.
According to the ministry, the measure aims to ensure the protection of public health while the investigation by the Medical Board continues.
