On Wednesday 9 July 2025, Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth announced the launch of the third edition of the "Upbooking" campaign, which encourages students to give their school textbooks a second life.
The ministry noted that as the school year ends, many textbooks end up either gathering dust in cupboards or being thrown away - a practice which has a negative impact on the environment.
To address this issue, the ministry is launching a new edition of "Upbooking", a platform that allows secondary school students to pass on their used textbooks to others who need them for the upcoming school year. This initiative helps reduce the significant volumes of paper, plastic and ink required for textbook production.
Through the www.upbooking.lu platform, students can create an account to offer textbooks or search for ones they need in just a few clicks.
In addition, since the introduction of free secondary school textbooks in Luxembourg in 2018/2019, the ministry has offered students a voucher worth 50% of the new price of any mandatory textbook obtained second-hand from a former student.
