Saturday 25 April 2026 marked the opening of this year's Octave market, the "Oktav-Mäertchen", on Place Guillaume II (Knuedler) in Luxembourg city centre.
The market was busy over the opening weekend, with many people enjoying the sunshine, food, attractions and festive atmosphere.
From Saturday 25 April until Sunday 10 May 2026, visitors can explore dozens of food stalls spread across more than 1,000 m2, along with game stalls and fairground attractions. Food options include traditional "gebakene Fësch" (fried fish), grilled meat and chips (fries), "gromperekichelcher" (Luxembourgish deep-fried potato pancakes), "spätzle" (a type of pasta), gyros, falafel, fish and chips, and pulled pork burgers. Sweet treats such as confectionery, ice cream and crepes are also on offer.
The Mäertchen is open daily from 11:00 to 22:00, although some fairground businesses may remain open until 23:00.
The Mäertchen is linked to the Octave of Pentecost, a religious celebration held in honour of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of both the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and its capital. The Octave initially lasted eight days (hence its name) but now takes place over sixteen days between Easter and Pentecost.
Originally, the Mäertchen provided fasting pilgrims with an opportunity to eat and shop in Luxembourg City after mass. Today, it has more of a festival or carnival feel, featuring a variety of fairground games and rides, and continues to attract thousands of visitors. The festivities typically conclude with a pontifical Mass and a closing procession through the streets of Luxembourg City on the final Sunday.
In 2025, the Mäertchen returned to its traditional spot on Place Guillaume II after being temporarily relocated to Place de la Constitution (Gëlle Fra) due to construction works.
2024-2025 also marked the 400th anniversary celebrations of the Octave in Luxembourg.
