On Monday 4 May 2026, Lidl Luxembourg launched a new “Scan & Go” service in its pilot stores in Dudelange, Strassen and Windhof.
Aimed to offer a “smoother, more autonomous and faster” shopping experience, the initiative began with a pilot phase in three stores and aims to transform the checkout process into a fully autonomous experience, while integrating new technologies such as artificial intelligence(AI)-based product recognition, explained the store.
According to Lidl, the “Scan & Go” service allows customers to scan items as they shop using the Lidl Plus app. This system allows customers to view the total cost of their shopping and the applied promotions in real time. Once shopping is complete, payment can be made at the self-checkouts (SCO), which is faster than regular checkouts.
As the main innovation accompanying this launch, Lidl highlighted the introduction of smart scales equipped with AI, which can identify the fruit or vegetable placed on them. The system displays the corresponding item on the screen and the customer needs to confirm.
A label with a barcode is then printed, so the item can be scanned either via “Scan & Go” on a smartphone or at SCO. Each pilot store will be equipped with three such scales, two in the fruit and vegetable section and one in the frozen section, specifically for seafood.
To support the launch, from Monday 4 May 2026 in-store promoters will be present to guide customers, explain how the new system works and ensure a smooth transition to this more autonomous shopping method.
“With these new technologies, we want above all to simplify our customers’ lives. The shopping journey becomes faster, but we maintain human contact through our in-store teams, whose working environment is also being modernised,” said Walériane Dubois-Decroix, spokesperson for Lidl Luxembourg.
Lidl said it plans to equip all its stores in Luxembourg with the “Scan & Go” system by early 2027.
