On Monday 16 March 2026, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) announced the lifting of bird flu containment measures and reopening of poultry exhibitions.
ALVA confirmed that, following an improvement in the health situation regarding avian influenza (H5N1) in Luxembourg, the enhanced prevention measures that had been put in place have now been relaxed.
Consequently, the ban on exhibitions, fairs and markets for poultry or captive birds has been lifted; these events may now resume. The requirement to confine poultry in enclosed spaces has also been removed.
Although confinement is no longer mandatory, it remains strongly recommended to limit any residual risk. Access to net-protected outdoor areas remains essential to limit contact with wild birds and minimise the risk of introducing the virus into flocks, according to ALVA. Moreover, feeding and watering must continue to take place under cover or inside the poultry house. Biosecurity rules must be strictly observed. Any abnormal mortality, clinical signs suggestive of avian influenza or unusual drop in production levels must be reported immediately to a veterinarian.
ALVA recalled that avian influenza remains a highly contagious viral disease to which almost all bird species are susceptible.
Although the situation is currently under control, vigilance remains essential. ALVA noted that the last positive case in Luxembourg was recorded on 9 February 2026.
The administration also emphasised that all poultry imports must be accompanied by a TRACES health certificate issued by an official veterinarian in the country of origin. This requirement also applies to poultry purchased at a market.
