The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) has published a meteorological report concerning the weather experienced across the Grand Duchy throughout Spring 2015 which thez described as colder and significantly dryer compared to the same period from 2001 to 2010.
After a turbulent start, the first quarter of spring 2015 saw regular anticyclones and was largely calm. Temperatures rose during the day, while the nights still were partly frosty. The end of March saw Luxembourg witnessing two storms, "Mike" and "Niklas". Then a calming weather period, and April was marked by high air pressure, warm temperatures and very little rainfall. The last third of the spring was again varied, and low pressure systems resulted in cooler air masses to Luxembourg.
In the spring of 2015, at all weather stations in Luxembourg, average temperatures were lower than the average of the comparison period 2001-2010. Compared to that period, the weather station at Findel measured -0.1 °C with the highest defference (-0.9 °C) in Oberkorn. The temperature curve shows that the values in April were above the average of 2001-2010, where March and May were slightly cooler. In long-term average (1981-2010), the deviations at the station Findel behaved exactly the opposite, and the spring turned out a little too warm (+ 0.5 °C).
In the spring of 2015, measured precipitation totals were significantly lower than the same period in 2001-2010. At the Echternach weather station, around one fifth (-21%) less rainfall was measured, while even less than half (-56%) was recorded at the Reuler weather station. The precipitate course at Findel showed that during the first two months of spring 2015 hardly any precipitation was measured, with the exception of the precipitation in connection with the two storms in late March. The rainfall in May remained well below those of the comparable periods.
In the last days of March, Central Europe was dominated by two unseasonably strong storms. Along the strong jet stream over the Atlantic Ocean, two areas of low pressure intensified on their way to Europe. The cold front "Mike" brought strong gusts, followed by heavy showers, over the night of 29/30 March in Luxembourg. On the morning of of 31 March, the warm front "Niklas" reached the Grand Duchy with further rainfall and strong winds. Luxembourg withessed considerable material damage.
