As a result of its age and poor state, the Ville de Luxembourg City decided in 2012 to completely renovate the permanent site of the Prince Jean football stadium in Merl; it has now re-opened for public use.
This extensive renovation project aimed to provide better sporting facilities and the necessary means for FC Red Star Merl-Belair to be able to continue its activities in a more comfortable and better adapted environment.
The first phase of the project involved the demolition of the former terraces which were completely dilapidated. Moreover, the retaining wall was repaired and a new fence fitted.
In the second phase, the football pitch was replaced by a synthetic one with new lights and a refreshment area. Other new installations include a meeting room, office, outdoor bar and kitchen, store room for sports equipment and locker room. The new benches sit 164 spectators.
