Luxembourg's Ministry of State recently launched a call for applications for the design, construction and installation of a monument in memory of Grand Duke Jean.
The State of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, represented by Prime Minister Luc Frieden, has launched a call for applications for the design, construction and installation of a sculpture or bust of Grand Duke Jean (1921-2019), who served as Grand Duke of Luxembourg from 1964 to 2000.
The monument will be erected in memory of the late Grand Duke Jean, whose "personality remains deeply rooted in the heart of the nation", said the Ministry of State, adding that "his reign left a lasting mark on the history of Luxembourg".
"A committed European and a shrewd diplomat, Grand Duke Jean proudly flew the flag for Luxembourg, both at home and abroad. He also contributed significantly to the Grand Duchy's influence and its attractiveness to leading international economic players," the ministry statement continued. "As Head of State, he distinguished himself by his calm, kindness and natural elegance".
The monument will be located in the Édouard André Municipal Park, in the "Pescatore Park" section of Luxembourg City. The project is open to professional visual artists.
The procurement procedure consists of three phases:
- Phase 1: Call for applications and selection procedure for five to ten candidates admitted to Phase 2;
- Phase 2: Design of preliminary projects and selection procedure for the winner;
- Phase 3: Construction and installation of the monument.
Each candidate who submits a complete preliminary design in Phase 2 will receive a lump sum compensation of €3,000 including VAT to cover the costs incurred in the study and preparation of the presentation documents.
Artists wishing to participate in this project and contribute to the memory of Grand Duke Jean are invited to submit their applications in digital format via the public procurement portal (www.pmp.lu; ref.: 2501400), before 16:00 on Wednesday 16 July 2025.
