Luxembourg’s Ministry for Mobility and Public Works has announced that on Wednesday 1 October 2025, Luxembourg Airport marked an important step in its development with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new fuel farm.
The ministry reported that Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg Minister for Mobility and Public Works, was joined by Fréd Ternes, Mayor of Niederanven, and Alexander Flassak, CEO of lux-Airport, in a symbolic act to officially launch the construction of the new fuel farm.
According to the ministry, the new fuel farm will comprise up to six storage tanks, each with a capacity of 5,000 m³, and represent a major step forward in the airport’s infrastructure modernisation. With the main storage tanks positioned landside and directly connected to the road system, and a dedicated supply system extending on the runway side, the design combines efficiency with resilience. In the unlikely event of a disruption, fuel deliveries can also be secured by truck.
The ministry stated that by significantly expanding storage capacity, the facility will ensure an uninterrupted fuel supply for airlines and partners, providing several days of operational autonomy and reinforcing supply security. The new facility is equipped with optimised heating and cooling systems which enhance both energy efficiency and safety. Its design also allows for the integration of multiple energy carriers including SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and military jet fuel, ensuring long-term adaptability as the aviation sector transitions toward alternative fuels.
Fully aligned with modern environmental standards, the installation is designed to be both sustainable and secure. The ministry highlighted that the investment underscores Luxembourg Airport’s commitment to combining operational reliability with environmental responsibility while preparing for future needs.
Highlighting the project’s significance, Minister Backes said: "This facility will not only increase the airport’s supply security and efficiency, it also demonstrates Luxembourg’s forward-looking approach in mobility and transport infrastructure."
"By modernising and expanding the capacity of the fuel depot, we are achieving greater security of supply and reserve capacity for increasing air traffic", said Alexander Flassak, CEO of lux-Airport. "In addition, relocating the fuel farm site will provide scope for future expansion of the cargo area."
The contracting authority for the project is the Ministry for Mobility and Public Works, while lux-Airport, as the delegated project manager, is responsible for the project’s execution. Completion and commissioning of the project are scheduled for 2028.
