
On Wednesday 15 October 2025, the Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in September 2025.
International Protection
A total of 154 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in September 2025 (compared to 130 in August 2025 and 177 in September 2024). To date this year, Luxembourg has received 1,332 applications for international protection, up from 1,308 during the first nine months of 2024.
Authorities took 175 decisions on asylum applications in September, granting refugee status to 68 applicants (60 in August).
In September, most applicants were Eritrean nationals (57), followed by Venezuelan (fourteen), Sudanese (nine), Afghan and Algerian (six each) nationals.
So far in 2025, most applications have come from Eritrean nationals (259), followed by Syrian (158), Algerian (73), Venezuelan (64), Afghan (61) and Turkish (59) nationals.
Temporary Protection
A total of 119 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in September 2025 (up from 78 in August). So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 781 such applications.
Authorities took 123 decisions on temporary protection applications in September, with 113 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (65 in August).
Most applicants in September (111) were Ukrainian nationals; seven applicants came from other unspecified countries.
Ukrainian nationals have also represented the largest group (713) among applicants for temporary protection so far this year. Moreover, there have been applications from 24 Algerian nationals, ten Moroccan nationals, six Armenian nationals and 28 nationals of other unspecified countries.
