On Friday 23 January 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of State announced that the government will join commemorative associations and the Jewish community of Luxembourg to mark the International Day Commemorating the Victims of the Shoah on Tuesday 27 January.

According to the ministry, in Luxembourg City, Prime Minister Luc Frieden will take part in a commemoration at the monument dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Shoah (Kaddish), located near the new Wall of Remembrance for Jewish victims of Nazism, inaugurated on 21 September 2025, on which the names of 1,225 individuals are inscribed.

In Esch-sur-Alzette, Marc Spautz, Minister of Labour, will attend the traditional ceremony held on the site of the former Esch synagogue, which was destroyed during the Second World War under Nazi occupation.

The ministry noted that on this day, the government will emphasise its continued and unwavering commitment to preserving the memory of the Shoah, transmitting its history to future generations, and combating all forms of antisemitism and racism.

The International Day Commemorating the Victims of the Shoah was established by the United Nations in 2005. It marks the liberation of the Nazi extermination camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945 by the Red Army.
