On Thursday 16 April 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration of Luxembourg’s Ministry of Home Affairs published its monthly overview of applications for international protection and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for March 2026.

International Protection

A total of 106 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in March 2026 (compared to 136 in March 2025 and 146 in March 2024). To date this year, Luxembourg has received 318 applications for international protection, down from 494 during the same period in 2024 and 318 in 2025.

Authorities took 141 decisions on international protection applications in March 2026, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 376. Of these, 83 resulted in the granting of refugee status.

According to the directorate, most applicants in March were from Sudan (fourteen), followed by Syria (twelve), Afghanistan and Venezuela (eight each). So far in 2026, most applications have come from Syrian nationals (38), followed by Eritrean (27), Sudanese (25) and Afghan (22) nationals.

Temporary Protection

A total of 72 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in March 2026 (up from 56 in February). So far this year, the country has received a total of 218 such applications.

Authorities took 804 decisions on temporary protection applications in March, bringing the total number of decisions this year to 963. Of these, 193 resulted in the granting of protection, while the majority (751) concerned renewals.

Most applicants in March (70) were Ukrainian nationals, while two applicants came from other countries. Ukrainian nationals have also represented the vast majority (208 out of 218, or 95.4%) of applicants for temporary protection so far this year.
