On Tuesday 5 May 2026, the General Directorate of the Grand Ducal Police of Luxembourg announced the signing of a cooperation agreement with the Federal Police Directorate of Koblenz regarding joint international patrols.
According to the Grand Ducal Police, the aim of the agreement is to intensify continuous cross-border cooperation in an effort to increase security in border areas and in cross-border transport connections, both to combat cross-border crime and to combat international terrorism within the framework of the respective competences. The joint patrols are also intended to contribute to increasing the sense of security among travellers and the population in the border region.
The joint patrols, consisting of personnel from the Grand Ducal Police as well as the Federal Police Inspectorates Trier and Saarbrücken, will generally be carried out in the border areas defined by each respective state, with a focus on cross-border road and rail transport networks and based on up-to-date police situation assessments.
The Director General of the Grand Ducal Police, Pascal Peters, stated: “In an increasingly interconnected world, we face challenges that know no national borders. Crime, terrorism and cross-border threats require close and trusting cooperation between security authorities.”
He added: “Through the exchange of expertise, resources and information, we can respond more quickly to threats and gain a more comprehensive picture of the security situation. We are convinced that through close cooperation with our German partners, we will be even better able to avert threats and ensure a high level of security.”
The President of the Federal Police Directorate Koblenz, Gregor Pelzl, emphasised: “I am pleased that the population in the border region of Luxembourg and Germany in particular will now regularly see joint German-Luxembourg patrols from our police forces on both sides. Joint patrols are a visible sign of a cooperative, trusting and strong collaboration in Europe. With this message, which we send today to the border region of the Our, Sauer and Moselle, we state: we jointly protect the people in the region and we resolutely combat those who threaten them!”
The Grand Ducal Police added that with the conclusion of the cooperation agreement, Germany and Luxembourg underlined their joint commitment to modern, effective and coordinated cross-border policing.
