The City of Luxembourg (VdL) has officially launched the artistic project My Urban Piano “Luxembourg”, which places seventeen pianos in public spaces across the city, including streets, tourist spots, neighbourhoods and parks.
The project, which runs until Tuesday 16 June 2026, was launched by the VdL on Wednesday 13 May 2026 in front of the Cercle Cité on Place d’Armes in Luxembourg-Ville. The opening concert, attended by the College of the Mayor and Aldermen, was performed by the two winners of the “My Urban Piano 2025” competition. Katharina Fischer performed Piano Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI:23 I. Allegro by Joseph Haydn and Tarantella Op.77 No.6 by Moritz Moszkowski, while Luna Hoogakker performed Prelude No.1 in C Major by Johann Sebastian Bach and Comptine d’un autre été by Yann Tiersen.
Each of the pianos located across the city has been decorated by partners from community, artistic and educational backgrounds, turning them into standalone works of art that are designed to blend into their urban surroundings. The VdL has encouraged everyone - from amateur pianists to experienced musicians - to use the pianos to “improvise micro-concerts and fill the capital with piano music”.
The VdL has also announced a series of concerts which are scheduled to take place at various locations across the city:
• Wednesday 13 May at 17:00, Place d’Armes: opening concert
• Wednesday 20 May at 17:00, Place d’Armes: Luca Sales
• Wednesday 3 June at 12:00, Parc Ed. Klein: Daniel Schweitzer (Luxembourg folk music)
• Sunday 28 June at 16:00, Place d’Armes: closing concert
The VdL has also reported there will be a series of spontaneous performances which will take place across the duration of the project. These will be announced on the VdL’s social media platforms.
Moreover, the VdL has made a call for “video enthusiasts” to record videos of people playing the pianos and to upload them onto Facebook or YouTube, using the hashtags #luxembourgcity and #myurbanpiano2025. Participants can win VdL shopping vouchers worth €400, €200 and €100. There are two entry categories: “musical performance” and “original piano-themed video”. To enter, participants should send a link to the video, along with the name of the person who filmed it, their address and telephone number via email to: concours@vdl.lu.
