On Tuesday 2 June 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) reported that its municipal bus network carried nearly 40 million passengers and covered approximately 13.4 million kilometres in 2025, as it continues preparations for the full electrification of the AVL bus fleet by 2027.

The strategic development priorities, performance figures and future projects of the City's bus service (Autobus de la Ville de Luxembourg - AVL) were outlined during a press conference by Patrick Goldschmidt, Alderman responsible for mobility, Paul Hoffmann, Mobility Director at VdL, and Lex Bentner, Head of Public Transport.

According to the VdL, the AVL currently employs 526 staff members, including 384 bus drivers. Its fleet consists of 130 buses, including 72 standard buses and 58 articulated buses, while subcontractors operate an additional 150 vehicles.

The network comprises 30 regular routes, 19 school transport routes and eight City Night Bus routes. In total, it includes 876 bus stops and covers 763 km.

In addition to its regular services, AVL operates the Call-a-Bus (CAB) service, which recorded 5,397 journeys for residents aged over 70 and 2,446 journeys for wheelchair users in 2025. The Infobus information service welcomed 10,174 visitors during the year, while the Tram Museum recorded 4,619 visitors.

The City noted that AVL's strategic development is centred on user satisfaction through an optimised and reliable network, improved digital services, clear passenger information, modern vehicles, enhanced safety and closer cooperation with other public transport operators, including CFL, Luxtram and RGTR.

The strategy also foresees the continued transition towards electric mobility, regular adjustments to services based on passenger needs and measures aimed at improving accessibility for persons with reduced mobility.

As part of these developments, the City of Luxembourg will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its municipal bus service and the 150th anniversary of public transport in the capital with a public open day on Saturday 6 June 2026.

Taking place from 10:00 to 17:00 at the AVL depot in Hollerich, the event will highlight the evolution of public transport in Luxembourg City and the role it has played in the capital's development.

Visitors will also be able to discover a temporary exhibition at the Tram Museum tracing the history of public transport from the first horse-drawn tram (Päerdstram), which began operating in February 1875, to today's tram network and the future fully electric AVL bus fleet.

The exhibition features historical photographs from the VdL Photothèque, audiovisual material, restored trams and buses, as well as scale models. Public transport historians will be present on 6 June to answer visitors' questions.

Admission to the open day is free. The temporary exhibition will remain open daily from 14:00 to 18:00 until Sunday 21 June 2026.
