On Wednesday 15 July 2026, the Grand Ducal Police reported an increase in violent thefts in Luxembourg City's Ville-Haute and Gare districts in recent weeks, adding that targeted operations carried out over the past weekend resulted in two arrests, 34 people being checked and seven being taken into custody for identification.
According to the police, both plain-clothes and uniformed officers from the Ville-Haute and Luxembourg police stations, together with investigators from the Serious Organised Crime Unit (Répression du Grand Banditisme) of the Judicial Police, took part in the targeted operations.
During one of the operations, Judicial Police officers witnessed a violent theft in which a victim's necklace was forcibly snatched. The suspected perpetrator was arrested immediately after the incident, although he physically resisted arrest. A second person, who accompanied the suspect but did not actively participate in the theft, was also taken into custody and brought to a police station for identification procedures. On the instructions of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the suspected perpetrator was arrested and brought before an investigating judge.
In connection with another violent theft, police also located the suspected perpetrator, who was arrested on the instructions of the Public Prosecutor's Office and brought before an investigating judge.
The police added that they will continue to maintain an increased presence and carry out targeted checks in the affected districts of the capital to combat this type of crime and help ensure public safety.
