On Thursday 22 October 2026, Luxembourg City's College of Mayor and Aldermen inaugurated the sculpture "Le Flambeau" ("The Torch") near Place de l'Étoile, in the presence of its creator, Luxembourgish sculptor Raymond J-M Petit.

Around 50 guests attended the inauguration ceremony.

According to the City of Luxembourg, the five-metre-high bronze sculpture pays tribute to the Luxembourg Resistance during the Second World War, as well as to the women and men who worked for the liberation of Luxembourg and opposed National Socialist ideology.

The commemorative sculpture has been temporarily installed on the site formerly occupied by the family home of resistance fighter Raymond Petit, the sculptor's uncle. Raymond Petit died on 21 April 1942 in Berdorf during an exchange of gunfire with the Gestapo.

Speaking to Chronicle.lu after the inauguration, Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer explained: "When the City of Luxembourg bought the house of Raymond Petit, his nephew, the sculptor Raymond Petit, made it a condition to remember his uncle through this sculpture. And so we agreed."

The mayor described the sculpture as a symbol of remembrance for those who gave their lives and fought for Luxembourg's freedom. She added that the city had accepted the proposal with great honour and that the sculpture would be part of the new public space planned for the site in the coming years.

The sculpture's final location will be examined as part of the public space development project under the PAP Place de l'Étoile.
