An auction of various jewellery, clothing, furniture and accessory items by employees of the Foyer Group in Luxembourg has seen €4,412.50 raised for Handicap International.
A cheque for this significant sum was presented by Philippe Bonte, Chief Financial Officer of insurance company Foyer Group to Handicap International Luxembourg, represented by director Bénédicte Degeest and Head of Corporate Sponsorships, Sandrine Guivarch.
"I welcome this generosity within the company, and thank all Foyer employees for this beautiful collective commitment," commented Philippe Bonte.
Handicap International, which has been present in the Grand Duchy for 19 years, works alongside people with disabilities to assist and support them in their self-reliance. The association implements awareness projects regarding the issues of landmines, cluster munitians and civilian bombing, talking at schools and organising fundraising programmes to support projects worldwide.
Bénédicte Degeest expressed her gratitude for the donation, which will go towards a road safety project in the South Asian country of Laos, one of the poorest in the world where road accidents are now the leading cause of disability.
To combat this, Handicap International is tackling the problem from several angles: a road safety awareness campaign among 20,000 students in schools, colleges and universities, aiming to prevent accidents through the use of helmets and awareness of speed; collaboration with 130 members of local road safety committees to enhance the skills of staff and with 60 police officers to establish security measures and make road safety a national priority.
