Luxembourg's National Centre for Industrial Culture (Centre national de la culture industrielle - CNCI) has announced the international conference "Digital Future for Industrial Heritage?" on Friday 20 November 2026 at the Black Box on the University of Luxembourg's Belval Campus in Esch-sur-Alzette.
Organised in collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) at the University of Luxembourg, the conference will explore how digital technologies are transforming the ways industrial heritage is studied, preserved and passed on. From 3D digitisation and artificial intelligence to artistic creation, new approaches are opening up opportunities for research, conservation and public engagement, while raising questions about their uses and limitations.
Taking place from 09:00 to 16:30, the event will bring together researchers, heritage specialists, representatives of European institutions and digital creators from Luxembourg and several European countries. The programme will feature an opening lecture, three thematic panels and a roundtable discussion dedicated to artificial intelligence.
The conference will open with a lecture by Marinos Ioannides, Director of the UNESCO Chair on Digital Cultural Heritage at the Cyprus University of Technology. He will present the concept of "Memory Twin", which combines digital representation, knowledge and heritage memory.
The programme will then focus on four main themes:
- Collecting and using digital industrial heritage data: Exploring participatory science, LiDAR data, artificial intelligence and 3D technologies, including an update on the digitisation of the historic Junglinster antennas.
- Visualising industrial heritage: Examining 3D technologies for modelling historic machinery and digitising heritage buildings.
- Artificial intelligence and industrial heritage: Exploring its possibilities and limitations, alongside issues related to data, skills and European cooperation.
- Digital mediation of industrial heritage: Exploring the links between artistic creation, contemporary technologies and industrial memory.
