The Luxembourg Ministry of Health has advised against consuming fish from the Attert, downriver from the Goodyear plant, following an oil spill that occurred last Thursday in Colmar-Berg.
Volunteer firemen and chemical accident units were forced to establish an emergency barrier in the river after a heavy film of oil was found on the river's surface, suspected to be the result of an incident with a cooling circuit in the nearby Goodyear factory.
State Secretary Camille Gira has now called on the Goodyear operator to provide additional information on the damage incurred, decreeing that the company must take all necessary measures to bring an immediate end to the discharge of the pollutants concerned.
The composition of the spilled oil and water from the Attert are currently being tested for chemical residues, whilst as a precautionary measure the Ministry of Health has recommended that fish caught downriver from the Goodyear plant, the Alzette downstream downstream of the Attert estuary and the Sauer, not be consumed whilst testing is underway.
