Film Fund Luxembourg has announced that three Luxembourg co-productions have been selected for the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, which will take place in Locarno (Switzerland) from Wednesday 6 to Saturday 16 August 2025.
According to Film Fund Luxembourg, this triple selection reflects the “quality and boldness” of Luxembourgish co-productions on the global festival circuit.
Among the selected films is Dracula by Romanian director Radu Jude, whose previous works have already been supported by the Film Fund Luxembourg. The film has been selected for the International Competition and will vie for the prestigious Golden Leopard prize. The fictional co-production involved Luxembourg’s Samsa Film (Jani Thiltges) and Paul Thiltges Distributions (Paul Thiltges and Adrien Chef), along with companies from Romania and Austria. Sound design and mixing were undertaken by Philophon Studios (Ken Nnganyadi, Céline Bernard, Michelle Couttolenc and Jaime Baksht).
The latest film by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, It Was Just AnAccident, will have its Swiss premiere in the festival’s iconic Piazza Grande section. The film, co-produced by Luxembourg’s Bidibul Productions (Christel Henon), alongside France and Iran, won the Palme d’Or at the most recent Cannes Film Festival and is eligible for the UBS Audience Award.
The third film, Exile by Tunisian director Mehdi Hmili, will feature in the contemporary Fuori Concorso section. This is a co-production between Luxembourg (Tarantula Luxembourg – Donato Rotunno), Tunisia, and France. Visual effects and deliverables were handled by Espera Productions (Raoul Nadalet) and sound mixing was completed at Roll Studio (Mike Butcher). The film is also in the running for the Green Leopard, a prize introduced in 2022 to honour ambitious works exploring deep and complex ecological issues.
