On Sunday 28 June 2026, the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage came to an end as the final round of matches confirmed the remaining sixteen Round of 32 places and completed the knockout bracket after 72 games.
Chronicle.lu has prepared an overview of the knockout fixtures, looking at how the final group-stage results shaped each tie. Europe (UEFA) has the largest representation in the Round of 32 with thirteen teams, followed by Africa (CAF) with nine, South America (CONMEBOL) with five, North and Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) with three, and Asia (AFC) with two. Among the biggest surprises of the group stage were the eliminations of Korea Republic, Uruguay and Turkey, all of whom failed to reach the knockout stage.
Canada's Home Advantage
The Round of 32 will begin in Los Angeles at 21:00 on Sunday 28 June 2026, where co-hosts Canada will face South Africa. The North American team progressed from Group B in second place despite a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final group-stage match, while Bafana Bafana secured second place in Group A with a surprise 1-0 victory over Korea Republic.
The winner will meet either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16. The Dutch topped Group F with seven points after beating Tunisia 3-1 in their final group match, while the Atlas Lions finished second in Group C following a 4-2 victory over Haiti. Their Round of 32 tie will take place in Seattle at 03:00 on Tuesday 30 June 2026.
Brazil Eye Sixth World Title
Five-time world champions Brazil will begin their knockout campaign against Japan in the Round of 32. Carlo Ancelotti's team secured top spot in Group C with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final group-stage match, while the Samurai Blue finished runners-up in Group F after drawing 1-1 with Sweden. Their Round of 32 encounter is scheduled for 19:00 on Monday 29 June 2026.
The winners will face either Côte d'Ivoire or Norway in the Round of 16. The Elephants claimed second place in Group E after defeating Curaçao 2-0 in their final group match. Norway, meanwhile, suffered a 4-1 defeat to France despite resting several key players, but also advanced as Group G runners-up. Their Round of 32 tie will kick off at 19:00 on Tuesday 30 June 2026.
Germany Face a Tricky Test
Four-time world champions Germany will face Paraguay despite suffering a surprise 2-1 defeat to Ecuador in their final Group E match. Julian Nagelsmann’s team nevertheless finished top of the group, while Paraguay advanced from Group D in third place after a goalless draw with Australia. Their match will take place in Boston at 22:30 on Monday 29 June 2026.
The winners will face either France or Sweden, who are scheduled to meet in New York at 23:00 on Tuesday 30 June 2026.
England on Mexico's Collision Course
The co-hosts Mexico will take on Ecuador after finishing top of Group A with a victory over Czechia in their final group-stage match. Ecuador, meanwhile, secured a place in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. Their match will take place in Mexico City at 03:00 on Wednesday 1 July 2026.
The winners will face either England or DR Congo. The Three Lions sealed top spot in Group L after defeating Panama 2-0 in their final group match, while the Leopards booked their place in the knockout stage by beating Uzbekistan 3-1 to finish among the best third-placed teams. Their encounter is scheduled for 18:00 on Wednesday 1 July 2026 in Atlanta.
Belgium & USA on Course to Meet
Belgium will face Senegal after sealing top spot in Group G with a 5-1 win over New Zealand in their final group-stage match. Senegal, meanwhile, reached the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams after defeating Iraq 5-0. Their match will take place in Seattle at 22:00 on Wednesday 1 July 2026.
The winners will face either the United States or Bosnia and Herzegovina. The co-hosts finished first in Group D despite a 3-2 defeat to Turkey in their final group match, while Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced from Group B in third place after beating Qatar 3-1. Their encounter is scheduled for 02:00 on Thursday 2 July 2026 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
An Iberian Derby in Sight
An Iberian derby could await in the Round of 16 if Spain and Portugal win their respective matches. Spain secured top spot in Group H after edging Uruguay 1-0 in their final group-stage match, while Austria advanced from Group J in third place following a thrilling 3-3 draw with Algeria. Their match will take place in Los Angeles at 21:00 on Thursday 2 July 2026.
Portugal, meanwhile, will face Croatia after finishing first in Group K following a goalless draw with Colombia in their final group fixture. Croatia secured second place in Group L with a 2-1 victory over Ghana. Their encounter is scheduled for 01:00 on Friday 3 July 2026 in Toronto.
An Open Path to the Quarter-finals
Switzerland and Algeria will meet in Vancouver at 05:00 on Friday 3 July 2026. The Swiss qualified as Group B winners, while Algeria progressed from Group J in third place.
The winners will face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16. Colombia advanced as Group K winners, while Ghana progressed as one of the best third-placed teams. Their match is scheduled for 03:30 on Saturday 4 July 2026 in Kansas City.
Argentina's Title Defence Begins
Current champions Argentina will begin their knockout campaign against Cabo Verde in Miami at 00:00 on Saturday 4 July 2026. Lionel Scaloni's team topped Group J after a 3-1 victory over Jordan, with Lionel Messi scoring his sixth goal of the tournament. The 39-year-old also became the first player in FIFA World Cup history to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches. Cabo Verde, meanwhile, finished second in Group H after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia, progressing to the knockout stage without losing a match, having drawn all three of their group fixtures.
