On Thursday 8 October 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Ministry of the Economy reported record participation in the seventh edition of Vëlosummer, with 50,161 bicycles counted across fourteen routes, an increase of 15% compared to 2025.
The seventh edition of Vëlosummer ran from Saturday 18 July to Sunday 16 August 2026 and was organised by the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Ministry of the Economy in close collaboration with the Roads and Bridges Administration, the Regional Tourist Offices (ORT) and 52 partner municipalities.
The programme invited residents and tourists to (re)discover the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by bicycle and formed part of the government's strategy to promote attractive mobility for cyclists while encouraging sustainable tourism and the discovery of the country's regions with family or friends.
“The success of this edition demonstrates that cycling is becoming increasingly embedded in our daily habits. Reaching such a participation milestone in just four weeks proves the relevance of our infrastructure and strengthens our determination to develop active and safe mobility throughout the year. By connecting our municipalities, Vëlosummer also boosts local tourism and highlights the richness of our regions,” stressed Minister for Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes.
The ministries noted that, following remarkable growth between 2024 and 2025, the 2026 edition confirmed the event's upward trend. In total, the programme offered 500 kilometres of cycling routes, including 100 kilometres of roads temporarily reserved for bicycles for one or two weekends.
The Vëlosummer Challenge, which required participants to complete all fourteen routes, also recorded an increase of more than 30% in the number of participants who successfully completed it. The challenge winners will receive an exclusive cycling jersey featuring the design of the 2026 edition of Vëlosummer.
“The success of this seventh edition confirms that Vëlosummer has established itself as a flagship summer event in Luxembourg. With record participation, it demonstrates the full potential of cycling to discover our country in a different way, at one's own pace, while combining outdoor activity, sustainable tourism and the discovery of our regions. This momentum encourages us to continue developing offers that inspire both residents and visitors to explore the diversity of our destination,” said Minister Delegate for Tourism Eric Thill.
According to the ministries, almost all routes recorded increased participation. Several routes stood out for their activities and popularity among cycle tourists. These included “Alles op de Vëlo”, with 6,999 bicycles recorded in a single day, “Uewersauer-Tour”, with 3,760 bicycles counted over one weekend, and “Groussen Tour vum Wëlle Westen”, with 2,426 bicycles over two weekends.
The ministries noted that the activities and events organised as part of Vëlosummer by municipalities, organisations and local clubs were particularly appreciated. An increasing number of participants also used their cycling outings as day trips, stopping to discover local gastronomy, attend events or visit tourist and cultural sites along the routes.
Vëlosummer forms part of the “Lëtzebuerg, dat ass Vakanz!” campaign, which aims to promote the discovery and rediscovery of Luxembourg through its regions, heritage and local experiences. The ministries noted that the 2026 edition reflected growing public interest in cycling and sustainable ways of exploring the country.
The two ministers also announced that the next edition of Vëlosummer will take place from Saturday 17 July to Sunday 22 August 2027.
