The Grand Ducal Police have reported that between the evening of Friday 18 and the morning of Monday 21 September 2026 multiple drivers received bans and had their licences confiscated for drink-driving offences.
According to the police, during the night of Friday 18 to Saturday 19 September, on the orders of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, it carried out several large-scale alcohol checks in Hesperange and Luxembourg City. A total of 163 drivers were checked; nine official reports were drawn up and two driving licences were confiscated on the spot. In addition, several minor offences were detected, such as failure to wear a seat belt in one case or irregularities with a vehicle in another case.
Shortly after 06:00 on Sunday 20 September, police were notified of an accident on Groussgaas in Frisange, where a vehicle had collided with a traffic light. At the scene, officers encountered the driver, who showed significant signs of alcohol and drug use. A subsequent breath alcohol test and a rapid drug test were both positive. A provisional driving ban was imposed.
At around 16:30, police were notified of a vehicle driving erratically on Rue de Bascharage in Oberkorn. When officers stopped the vehicle shortly afterwards, the driver showed clear signs of alcohol consumption. An alcohol test was subsequently carried out and was also positive in this case. The driver’s licence was confiscated.
Shortly before 23:00, police were notified of a traffic accident on the N7 in Marnach involving a trapped person. The driver received initial treatment at the scene and was taken to hospital for a check-up. As the driver showed significant signs of alcohol consumption, an alcohol test was carried out. It was positive. The driver’s licence was confiscated and an official report was drawn up.
At around 23:30, police were notified of a drunk person who had driven away in their car. The vehicle was located shortly afterwards on Rue du Canal in Ettelbruck. In this case too, the driver showed signs of alcohol consumption. In addition, the driver was already subject to a provisional driving ban. An alcohol test was carried out and was positive. A further provisional driving ban was issued, an official report was drawn up, and the vehicle was seized on the orders of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
In the early morning of Monday 21 September, officers noticed a vehicle driving erratically on the N1 in Grevenmacher. During the subsequent inspection, officers detected a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle. An alcohol test was subsequently carried out and was positive. An official report was drawn up and the driver’s licence was confiscated.
Moreover, shortly before 08:00 on Monday 21 September, officers observed a person on Rue de Reims in Luxembourg City who was about to get into their vehicle and was clearly intoxicated. The officers subsequently detected a strong smell of alcohol coming from the man. To prevent him from using the vehicle, they took his keys away. Further investigation also revealed that he was already subject to a driving ban. An official report was drawn up.
