On Friday 12 December 2025, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) announced the recall of "Red Snapper" fish steaks from the brand Perfit due to the presence of ciguatoxins.
The following product has been recalled from various points of sale in Luxembourg: Perfit Red Snapper Steaks, 1kg, with the best before date 10/04/2027 and the lot number 25-00409.
There is currently an orange awareness level warning (meaning "be careful - medium risk / danger) in place for these products.
The authorities noted that ciguatoxin is a powerful neurotoxin whose ingestion causes ciguatera, a non-bacterial foodborne illness. It generally leads first to gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea), followed by neurological symptoms (the most characteristic and persistent - muscle and joint pain, tingling and the paradoxical sensation of temperature reversal, where cold is perceived as burning). Cardiovascular symptoms are rarer, but potentially serious (drop in blood pressure, bradycardia).
Anyone who has consumed the product in question and is experiencing any of these clinical signs is advised to seek immediate medical attention.
