On Monday 20 April 2026, the Aldermen’s College of the City of Luxembourg (VdL) inaugurated an exhibition dedicated to the work of Pe’l Schlechter, a pioneer of Luxembourg comic art and an emblematic figure in graphic creation in Luxembourg.

The VdL reported that on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition at the Résidence Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte “Konviktsgaart” in Luxembourg-Ville, the artist, who currently resides at Konviktsgaart, shared insights with the public into his artistic career, his major works, his sources of inspiration and the evolution of his style over the decades.

At the opening, the Aldermen’s College paid tribute to the artist, born on 20 April 1921, and extended its congratulations on the occasion of his 105th birthday.

Pe’l Schlechter entered the Lycée des Arts et Métiers in 1937, where he trained as a building technician. The Second World War interrupted this path, when he was confronted with the Reich Labour Service and later forced conscription. After 1945, he collaborated with architects Pierre Reuter and Léon Loschetter, for whom he produced plans and drawings for reconstruction projects and church construction. He subsequently worked with architect Pierre Gilbert before founding his own graphic arts studio. In 1972, he finally joined the team of the Luxembourg International Fair.

His long and prolific career includes the creation of countless advertising posters, logos, packaging, postage stamps, medals and jewellery. To this graphic body of work is now added a literary dimension: published in 2012, his autobiographical book De Paul muss an de Krich recounts his experiences during the Second World War. The work was awarded the Lëtzebuerger Buchpräis in 2013.

The Pe’l Schlechter exhibition is open from Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 18:00, until Saturday 20 June 2026.

Admission is free.
