On Wednesday 1 June 2016, the Syndicat d'Intérêts Locaux Pfaffenthal-Siechenhod (SILPS) non-profit organisation will be commemorating the 40th anniversary of the explosion that shook Luxembourg-Pfaffenthal in the 1970s.

On 30 May 1976, the driver of a transport company accidentally dumped 10,000 litres of gasoline into a pipeline in Cessange instead of a tank, which then spread through the pipe system up to rue du Pont in Pfaffenthal. A spark from a refrigerator compressor set the gases on fire, resulting in an explosion which killed three people and injured a further 25, leaving 17 houses destroyed.

In recognition of the disaster and in honour of the victims it created, a procession will form next Wednesday at 17:00 in front of the Pfaffenthal church along rue Vauban. The procession will make its way to the memorial plaque, listing the names of the victims, affixed near Béinchen (rue du Pont). The college of Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Luxembourg, city councillors, the priset and the Pfaffenthal Fire Department will accompany the ceremony.

Any individual wishing to participate in the commemoration are invited to join the procession.
