On Tuesday 6 January 2026, the Grand Ducal Police reiterated their warning about fraudsters impersonating police officers.
The police said they continue to receive reports of fraud cases in which perpetrators pose as police officers to persuade victims to hand over valuables.
In this scam, the perpetrators contact victims via WhatsApp or phone call and tell them they have fallen victim to cyber fraud. The victim is then instructed to click on a link and enter their LuxTrust login details, as well as to approve the LuxTrust request on their smartphone. This gives the perpetrators access to the victim's accounts.
The victim is subsequently asked whether they own any valuables. Under the pretext of wanting to secure these items, a supposed police officer then appears at the victim's home to collect them.
The police stressed that this is not how they operate, noting that every police officer in Luxembourg speaks Luxembourgish and is able to present official identification.
The police issued the following advice:
- do not allow oneself to be pressured under any circumstances; if in doubt, call the emergency number 113 to verify the identity of police officers;
- do not give out any personal information to strangers.
The police also urged the public to inform and raise awareness about this type of fraud among older people in the community.
Images of police identification and uniforms were also provided to help members of the public recognise genuine police officers.
