On Thursday 17 September 2026, Luxembourg's interministerial drones assessment unit met following several reports of the potential presence of unidentified drones in Luxembourg airspace.
According to the Luxembourg Government, the reports mainly concerned an area in the Medernach region. The assessment unit met to evaluate the situation, after which Prime Minister Luc Frieden convened the relevant ministers and authorities.
At the time of the announcement, the information available did not allow the authorities to draw any definitive conclusions. The competent authorities were analysing the information gathered and continuing the necessary checks, including with foreign partners.
As part of their prevention and vigilance duties, the authorities are also taking appropriate monitoring and awareness-raising measures with the relevant stakeholders.
The government noted that, under the applicable government plan adopted by the Government Council in March 2026, the interministerial drones assessment unit is responsible for centralising available information, monitoring developments and assessing potential consequences for Luxembourg's population and territory.
The unit brings together representatives of the administrations and services responsible for security, territorial protection and airspace surveillance.
