Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced that, on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8 September, it is relaunching the campaign for adults wishing to acquire the basic skills to read, write, calculate, or navigate in an increasingly digital world; this campaign is running from 1 to 15 September 2025.

In Luxembourg, as in other European countries, it is estimated that 10-12% of adults lack these skills. The campaign, led by the Adult Education Department (SFA) of the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, aims to motivate those concerned to enrol in the free courses offered by the SFA and to train in order to better participate in professional and social life.

The basic education courses in French, German or Portuguese are free and organised in the evenings in a decentralised manner, to facilitate access to as many people as possible. They are available in Luxembourg-Clausen, Ettelbruck, Warken, Wiltz, Mersch, Echternach and Esch-Belval. Partner associations are also organising courses in other municipalities.

Basic education courses are taught by specialised and experienced instructors. During the first session, the instructor first assesses the learner's knowledge and then establishes a work programme based on the learner's personal goals and professional situation. The basic education instructors then support four to five learners in a friendly setting. They also adapt the teaching materials to the learner's individual needs.

The telephone number 80 02 99 99 has been set up for interested individuals, who will be guided by a specialised support worker. Requests are treated strictly confidentially.
